ABSTRACT

An observation system observes behavior of a person, objects, or a group of persons and objects in an environment and prepares a database of all activities and events as well as store raw data and intermediate processing results to provide analysis interfaces to understand and gain insights by correlating all multifarious data collected from disparate sensors and other sources. Observation systems have applications in many areas including but not limited to surveillance, traffic monitoring, ethnography, marketing, and healthcare. In this paper, we discuss functionality requirements and technical components of an observation system. We will present research on analysis, organization, management, and presentation of observations using heterogeneous sensors in observation systems. Finally, we will describe a test bed for conducting experiments and sharing results in this space that is already operational and is being continuously enhanced in our group for research in observation systems.
